AAMU Bowling retires Whitney Smith's number

Whitney Smith, a graduate of Grissom high school, was a member of the Alabama A & M bowling team from 2004 – 2008. During her tenure she compiled a resume that has been unequaled by any bowler in the history of this team and arguably any athlete at Alabama A& M University.

She began her career rolling a 286 game which was the team record at the time and was named SWAC rookie of the year. She currently owns 5 A & M records in career pinfall, games played, single season high average, career high average and team high series.

She made first team all conference 4 times, was SWAC player of the year, team MVP 3 times and All American 3 times.

The bowling team was 228-104 in her four years which included a SWAC Championship in 2007, runner up in 2008, finished first in the eastern division 3 times and third place in both 2005 and 2006. But the highlight came in 2006 when the team was runner up at the 2006 NCAA Championship in Houston, Texas.

Competing for the first time at NCAA, we were considerable underdogs. The bulldogs went on to finish second to Fairleigh Dickinson University, but only after eliminating the 2 time defending national champion Cornhuskers of Nebraska. The team knocked out Nebraska by beating them twice in the double elimination tournament with Whitney stepping up in the last frame and delivering 3 strikes in a row on ESPN to beat them by 1 pin.

It is with great honor that we retire jersey #22, Whitney Smith.
