NEBRASKA JUMPS TO NO. 2 RANKING AFTER CONVINCING VICTORY
DOVER, DE – A NCAA bowling record of 24 competing teams assembled in Baltimore, MD for the Morgan State Invitational, and the tournament champions, the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, was rewarded, proven by the Huskers climb to a No. 2 ranking in the latest National Tenpins Coaches Association national poll. This is the fifth of six monthly polls scheduled for the 2006-2007 season by the NTCA.
The Huskers (51-12-0) won all of their head-to-head matches during the event and ran away from the field during the second day of competition, distancing their nearest competitor by 322 pins. It is the second title of the season for Nebraska-Lincoln, which is 10-0-0 since the last poll.
Maintaining the top spot for the fifth consecutive poll was Fairleigh Dickinson University of Teaneck, NJ. The Knights (71-14-0) were extremely busy during February, winning the title at the Capital Classic in Dover, DE and their fourth consecutive Northeast Women’s Collegiate Bowling Conference championship, as well as the runner-up trophy at the Morgan State Invitational. FDU went 22-3-0 in matches last month.
Vanderbilt University of Nashville, TN dropped a place in the poll, despite capturing the tournament championship at the AAMU Holiday Classic in Bessemer, AL. The Commodores (62-13-0) finished fourth in Baltimore, MD, as well. VU’s match record for February was 16-3-0.
Slipping one position to No. 4 was New Jersey City University of Jersey City, NJ. The Gothic Knights (62-20-1) had a trio of bronze medal finishes during this past month. NJCU landed in third place at the Capital Classic, ended in third at the Morgan State Invitational, and finished third in the NEWCBC final standings. During February, NJCU had a match record of 16-8-1.
The University of Central Missouri of Warrensburg, MO held onto the No. 5 ranking after a fifth place finish in Baltimore, MD and a third place finish in Bessemer, AL. The Jennies (64-21-1) are 15-4-0 since the last poll.
The University of Maryland – Eastern Shore of Princess Ann, MD remained as the sixth ranked team. The Hawks (75-18-0) finished second at the Capital Classic and sixth at the Morgan State Invitational. Moving up a place to No. 7 was Sacred Heart University of Fairfield, CT. The Pioneers (52-20-0) rallied during the last meet of the NEWCBC season to finish second in the final standings. SHU also finished fourth at the AAMU Holiday Classic. Arkansas State University of Jonesboro, AR continued its ascent in the poll to eighth place. The Indians took home the silver medal in Bessemer, AL. Alabama A&M University of Huntsville, AL (59-24-0) slipped to No. 9, despite winning their first South West Athletic Conference title this past month. Capping the top 10 was Texas Southern University of Houston, TX. The Tigers (56-17-0) finished third in the SWAC.
