HUSKERS MARCH INTO #1 RANKING WITH STRING OF VICTORIES
DOVER, DE – After closing out the regular season with tournament championships at the Music City Classic in Nashville, TN and the Brunswick Windy City Classic in Waukegan, IL, the National Tenpins Coaches Association has ranked the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, as the nation’s top ranked team in the final NTCA “Sweet 16” of the regular season. This is the sixth monthly poll that the NTCA conducted during the 2006-2007 season.
The Huskers (73-15-0), who were invited to the NCAA National Championship Tournament for the fourth consecutive season, won their final three tournaments of the year, giving Nebraska-Lincoln four titles for 2006-07.
Slipping to the No. 2 was Fairleigh Dickinson University of Teaneck, NJ. Since the last poll the Knights (88-23-0) won the ECAC Championship, their fifth crown of the season, but struggled in their final event with a third place finish at the Brunswick Windy City Classic. FDU, the defending national champions, were selected for the fourth straight year to compete at the NCAA Championships, as well.
Vanderbilt University of Nashville, TN held onto third place in the poll. The Commodores (70-14-0) finished third at the Music City Classic and was chosen for the second consecutive season to be in the NCAA Championship field of eight.
The University of Central Missouri of Warrensburg, MO climbed to the No. 4 ranking after back-to-back second place finishes at the Music City Classic and the Brunswick Windy City Classic. The Jennies (81-28-1) also landed a spot in the NCAA Championship field, their fourth straight invite.
Sliding down one spot to No. 5 was New Jersey City University of Jersey City, NJ. The Gothic Knights (69-21-1) took home the third place trophy at the ECAC Championship, their only competition since the last poll. NJCU gets to continue their season after receiving their fourth straight bid to the NCAA Champioships.
The University of Maryland – Eastern Shore of Princess Ann, MD was ranked as the sixth place team, once again. The Hawks (85-21-0) won the MEAC Championship and was rewarded with their fourth consecutive NCAA Championship bid. The No. 7 squad was Sacred Heart University of Fairfield, CT. The Pioneers (57-26) had a rebound season and will return to the NCAA Championships for the third time, after missing last season. Arkansas State University of Jonesboro, AR (61-44-2) held onto eighth place, and Alabama A&M University of Huntsville, AL (61-31-0) remained as the ninth ranked team. Rounding out the top 10 was Minnesota State University-Mankato (45-37-0) which garnished the one of the eight NCAA Championship spots due to its strength of schedule.
