HUSKERS RETAIN NTCA No. 1 RANKING

HACKENSACK, NJ – For the second consecutive poll, the University of Nebraska – Lincoln was voted as the nation’s No. 1 team by the National Tenpins Coaches Association, the leadership of NCAA women’s bowling. The Huskers received 14 of 20 first place votes in this latest NTCA national poll, the fourth of six scheduled polls for the 2007-’08 season.

Since the last poll, Nebraska-Lincoln (47-12) claimed its fourth team title of the season at the Greater Ozark Invitational in Springfield, MO and finished fourth at the 18-team Mid-Winter Classic in Jonesboro, AR. The Huskers will next put their first place ranking on the line at the Morgan State Invitational in Baltimore, MD on February 16-17, 2008.

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore of Princess Anne, MD moved up to the No. 2 ranking in the poll, garnishing five first place votes. The Hawks (78-19) were triumphant at the Mid-Winter Classic, which had a competitive field that included all NTCA Top-10 schools but one, and took the third place trophy at the 20-team Bowie State Invitational in Laurel, MD, during the polling period.

Vanderbilt University of Nashville, TN, was ranked third by NTCA membership and received one first place vote. The Commodores (51-19), the defending national champions, look to right their powerful ship at the Morgan State Invitational this weekend after a fourth place finish at the Greater Ozarks and a ninth place finish at the Mid-Winter Classic.

The No. 4 ranked team was Sacred Heart University of Fairfield, CT. The Pioneers (61-11) climbed four places in the poll after winning 33 of their last 36 matches. During the past month SHU won the North East Women’s Collegiate Bowling Conference championship, placed second place at the Mid-Winter Classic, and finished in fourth place conclusion at the Bowie State Classic.

The University of Central Missouri of Warrensburg, MO was voted to the fifth place ranking. The Jennies (52-18) finished third at the Greater Ozarks and placed fifth at the Mid-Winter Classic.

Leading the second tier of the Top-10 in sixth place was Fairleigh Dickinson University (67-29) of Teaneck, NJ. The Knights won the Bowie State Classic title and placed in third in the NEWCBC and the Mid-Winter Classic final standings. New Jersey City University (59-22) of Jersey City, NJ was the seventh place ranked squad after second place finishes in the NEWCBC and the Bowie State Classic. Arkansas State University (42-20) of Jonesboro, AR was ranked eighth thanks to a second place ending at the Greater Ozarks and an eighth place close at the Mid-Winter Classic. Once again, the ninth ranked team was Alabama A&M University (47-17) of Huntsville, AL. The Bulldogs finished in seventh place at the Mid-Winter Classic and sit in second place in the South West Athletic Conference Eastern Division standings. Delaware State University (64-26) of Dover, DE and Minnesota State University – Mankato (40-16) tied for the tenth place ranking.

Point system:

   NTCA voters rank the top 20 teams on their ballot. Each position has an assigned point value, ranging from 32 points for first place and one point for twentieth place. After the total points for every team is calculated, the totals are sorted in descending order. The specific point values follow:

   1st place = 32 points, 2nd = 29, 3rd = 27, 4th = 25, 5th = 23, 6th = 21, 7th = 19, 8th = 17, 9th = 15, 10th = 13, 11th = 11, 12th = 9, 13th = 8, 14th = 7, 15th = 6, 16th = 5, 17th = 4, 18th = 3, 19th = 2, 20th = 1.
